Jewish Lexicons - Word of the Week

Throughout 2022-2023 we regularly posted different words that appear in our crowdsourced dictionary of words used by Jews within English. These posts - designed to be clear and engaging - highlight the diversity of Jews who speak English. You can see words for religious and cultural practices, as well as everyday expressions, used by North Americans, Brits, Australians, and South Africans, with etymologies in Yiddish, Hebrew, Aramaic, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, Bukharian, and more. And don’t forget to check the full entries in the Jewish English Lexicon to hear pronunciations and read all the juicy details!

In fall 2024 we began our Lexicon 2.0, expanding beyond Jewish English into heritage words and other crowdsourced words used by Jews across many languages.
